A tale of two parking lots

A preserved tree with drastically altered surrounding grade
Although the parking lot engineer has provided a root protection zone for this tree, it is obviously suffering from construction damage. Note the broken limbs and thin foliage, a sign of extreme stress.
When engineers opt to create a perfectly level parking lot in our Hill Country terrain, the inevitable result is either removal of most trees or absurd preservation attempts such as the one shown. In contrast, when parking lots are designed to flow with the land’s natural contours, the result is a thing of beauty.
