Heritage trees to be bulldozed on City golf course

City officials have approved the removal of heritage pecan and oaks, and dozens of other large trees, from Brackenridge Golf Course. One of the pecans has a 34" diameter trunk.

The City is leasing the course to a private golf organization that wants to clear trees from fairways to enable longer drives. According to the City's website, "Old Brack" is the oldest 18-hole public course in Texas with "old oak and pecan trees on the front nine". (Editor's note: since this article was written, the City has removed its web pages about public golf courses and forwarded requests to a commercial website.)

On Monday, January 28, 2008, the City's Parks and Recreation Board will hear a presentation from Jim Roschek of the MGASA regarding proposed changes to the course.
