Representative Leibowitz' Arbor Day Tree Planting

This year, in late April, State Representative David McQuade Leibowitz will sponsor his “First Annual Arbor Day Tree Planting” working with the city, the school district and all those who wish to participate in planting trees along Ray Ellison Drive. A combination of shade trees and crepe myrtles will be planted in this first contribution toward both beautifying the area and providing a benefit to the environment. The tentative dates for planting the trees and crepe myrtles are either Friday, April 28th, at 9 am, or Monday, May 1st, at 9 am. The final date will be set as soon as we have a better understanding of when the special session will be meeting on those days. All those who contribute trees, crepe myrtles or who make a contribution toward planting or maintaining the trees will be notified so that they may participate in the event.

Now that the logistics are being worked out, we all have the opportunity to contribute toward this effort. You may decide you want to contribute the cost of a shade tree ($300) or a crepe myrtle ($100) in memory of a loved one or someone who was important to your life. A small plaque will be placed by the tree identifying to whom it is dedicated. Or, maybe you want to contribute to the cost of planting the trees and maintaining them. Anything you contribute will be used to enlarge the space planted.

We are all responsible for the world we live in and often feel overwhelmed by the number of things that need to be done. And, while this is a small thing, it is another beginning to make our world more beautiful and healthier for those who come after us.

So, if you wish to be a part of this first ever Leibowitz’ Arbor Day Tree Planting project, just make your check to me (Joyce Dorrycott) and mail it to me at 6454 Village Park, San Antonio, TX 78250. You will be kept apprised of our progress, of those who are participating and the details of the planting. So, send whatever you feel you can, and we will use it well. So far the following people have contributed for shade trees: State Representative David Leibowitz (4), Mayor Phil Hardberger, in memory of Bonnie Terry, Councilman Richard Perez, the PACE Neighborhood Association, Northwest Democrats in memory of Pat Maloney, Sr., San Antonio Trees, and Christian Archer of the Archer Group. The following have contributed crepe myrtles: Congressman Charlie Gonzalez (2), Judge Barbara Nellermoe, Judge Michael Mery and Mrs. Helen Luna in memory of her husband, State Senator Greg Luna.

If you would like to join this group in donating a shade tree, a crepe myrtle, or by simply sending a donation toward the planting and/or maintaining the trees, please let me hear from you. Should you need any further information, please call me at 387-3931.

Thank you,
